Abstract Submission and Paper Awards

Abstracts are to be prepared and submitted electronically according to the instructions given below.

Content. The abstract should indicate the contaminant(s) being studied and the scale of the project. Identify the technology or methods. Case studies with novel approaches are especially desired. Preference will be given to those abstracts that provide a concise and thorough summary of the project objectives and results.

Format. Abstracts are written in English and cannot exceed one page and abstracts must be prepared using standard PC-based MS Word software. Use a 11-point serif font (e.g. Times New Roman) and leave 1-inch (2.5-cm) margins left, right, top, and bottom. Center the title (maximum 20 words, title case, bold type) at the top of the page. Leave a blank line before beginning the author list, which also is centered. If several authors are from one organization, the organization need be typed only once. After each author or group of authors, use parentheses to enclose their affiliation - institution (first level only, omit division, department, etc.), city, state/province (if applicable) and country. Bold and italicize the name of the presenting author. Leave a blank line after the authors and then begin the text, typing it single-spaced and justifying only the left margin. Leave one blank line between paragraphs; do not indent paragraphs. Authors can download an example from the Conference web site at http://www.aasci.org/conference/env/doc/abstract-format-2018.pdf.

Submission and Cover Note. Abstracts are submitted electronically via e-mail. Send the abstract to env-abstract@AASci.org. Receipt of the abstract will be acknowledged by e-mail. When submitting, include the necessary submittal data in the cover note, organized under the following format:

(1) Title: Title of abstract should not exceed 20 words. (2) Author and Address: Presenting author is the person expected to make the presentation at the Conference. Include all contact information - Name, highest degree, academic employment title, department, institution, street number and name, city, state/province, zip/postal code, country, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. (3) Author List: List full names of all coauthors and contact information - all the same as the presenting author. Indicate who is the corresponding author of the paper/abstract. (4) Presentation Preference: Indicate whether the author prefers a platform (oral) or a poster presentation. Refer to the suggested presentation topics in the list and select one to three sessions (e.g., 3.3, 9.2). The author's preference will be taken into account, but placement cannot be guaranteed.

Review. All abstracts will be reviewed. The Scientific/Technical Program Committee will consider authors' suggestions as to session and format (platform or poster), but the final decision will be based on overall design of the Conference program.

Notification of Acceptance.
The Committee's decision on each abstract will be mailed to the presenting author. If the abstract was accepted, this letter will state the platform or poster session to which the abstract has been assigned and will provide instructions to prepare the presentation.

Publication. Manuscripts will be invited for all abstracts accepted for platform or poster presentation; the submittal deadline will be July 31, 2018. Papers qualified for the publication standards are published in the Proceedings of Environmental Science and Technology. Full papers which receive high scores in the review process will be selected for publication in several peer reviewed journals. Later submission of papers with high quality is also considered for review and publication in the journals.

Student Paper Award. The first author of the paper must be a full-time student when the paper is submitted for the student paper competition. Advisors and other co-authors may be listed, but the paper must be presented (either platform or poster) by the student. Student papers for the competition must be received by May 25, 2018. Winning papers will be selected in early June, 2018 and will be recognized during the Plenary Session.

Young Scientist Paper Award. The first author of the paper must be a young scientist under 40 (born after 1/1/1977) when the paper is submitted for the Young Scientist Paper Award competition. Other co-authors may be listed, but the paper must be presented (either platform or poster) by the Young Scientist candidate. Young Scientist papers for the competition must be received by May 25, 2018. Winning papers will be selected in early June, 2018 and will be recognized during the Plenary Session.

Paper Award. Outstanding papers will be selected for the Excellent Paper Awards. Papers for competition must be received by May 25, 2018. International authors (non-North American) are especially encouraged to submit papers for the competition. Winning papers will be selected in June, 2018 and will be recognized during the Plenary Session.

Poster Award. Outstanding posters will be selected for the Poster Award during the poster presentations. Winning posters will be recognized after the Conference.
